Heart

I hope everyone is enjoying this day as much as we are! I sent the kids off to school after a breakfast of heart pancakes, ready to deliver yarn-tied bags of treats to their buddies. My Valentine cards went out on time (a good thing) but I didn't photograph them (not so great), so I put that last photo up to show you last year's labor-intensive push-drill Valentines. Now I'm off to bake a chocolate cake! Happy day to everyone!

Pie!

The two-year-old and six-year-old collaborated on this amazingly delicious, juicy, cinnamon-scented strawberry-rhubarb pie, made especially for their dad.

We used the beautiful fruit from our CSA. The recipe came from epicurious. Yum!

First

We harvested our first lettuce from the garden. It grew from last year's seed, unannounced and unplanned, as so many of the best things in life are. I pulled it from the ground and brought it inside to wash, but first had to admire its green beauty. As I lay it on the table, ants scampered from the dirt, small slugs waited on the veins, and down on one of those fine white roots balanced a tiny spider, as though on the high wire--swaying, bouncing, pivoting, swinging--perhaps wondering why the earth had moved from dark to light. 

Who knew there would be so much life on a single plant?

June!

Oh, the colors of June! I love them. I guess this means winter is really and truly over! 

I am hoping to be in this space a bit more frequently in the coming weeks. Thanks for staying with me--it's always nice to know you all are out there.

A little more cheer for Monday

 

I completed five napkins for my daughter's lunch box, one for each day of the week. Yes, I am such a slow maker of things that it took the entire weekend to complete the final two napkins. But aren't they cute? Too bad they are going to come home covered in tamari and apple sauce. 

 The teachers at my daughter's school have given me a few sewing assignments. Maybe they saw the napkins and thought I had too much time on my hands. Anyway, the first assignment will be fun: a set of bean bags in rainbow colors. At least we know I am good at sewing square things!

Oh, and we did make something else this weekend: peanut butter cookies! It's been a long time since I've made any, and they are so good! (Sorry to anyone out there with allergies). We used the recipe from Martha's excellent cookie book.

Time to wonder

I need to take a little break from this blog. It's summer, after all, and I find that I have much to catch up on. I hope that you all will join me again in August (and welcome, new readers who found me through Resurrection Fern!) after I have had a little time to . . .
